Frequently asked questions
Are school calendars the same across the United States?
No. Each district sets its dates within the number of instructional days required by its state. Two neighboring districts can be a week apart for spring break.
Why is a holiday not always observed on its official date?
When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, it is observed the Monday after. The observed date is the one that closes government offices.
Where do the dates on this site come from?
Each page shows its official source and the date it was last verified. Federal holidays follow OPM rules, tax deadlines follow the IRS, and school calendars follow the districts.
What does a district marked “collecting” mean?
We have identified the official source but have not yet checked the calendar. No dates are published for that district until the review is complete.
