US sales: the dates that matter
The big shopping dates follow the calendar, not a press release. Here are the late-2026 dates, and why the rest vary.
| Event | 2026 dates | What is actually on sale |
|---|---|---|
| Black Friday | November 27, 2026 | Electronics, appliances and toys. Discounts are real, but often on last year’s models. |
| Cyber Monday | November 30, 2026 | Online stores and subscriptions. Little difference from Friday for electronics. |
| Holiday season | Dec 1, 2026 – Dec 24, 2026 | Toys and gifts; prices rise from mid-December on in-demand products. |
Thanksgiving 2026 falls on November 26, 2026. Black Friday is the next day, Cyber Monday the following Monday.
The late-2026 shopping calendar
Federal holidays| Date | Event | How the date is set |
|---|---|---|
| November 26, 2026 | Thanksgiving Day | Most stores close; some open in the evening. |
| November 27, 2026 | Black Friday | The day after Thanksgiving, 1 day later. |
| November 28, 2026 | Small Business Saturday | The Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. |
| November 30, 2026 | Cyber Monday | 4 days after Thanksgiving. |
| December 24, 2026 | Christmas Eve | Shortened hours at most retailers. |
| December 25, 2026 | Christmas Day | The quietest shopping day of the year: most stores are closed. |
| December 31, 2026 | New Year’s Eve | Clearance on seasonal stock. |
| January 1, 2027 | New Year’s Day | Many stores closed or on reduced hours. |
Every date in this table is derived from Thanksgiving, which federal law fixes to the fourth Thursday of November, or from Christmas and New Year’s Day, which have fixed calendar dates.
Why state sales tax holidays are harder to date
Sales tax holidays — days without tax on clothing or school supplies — are set by each state, and some are voted in the spring for the summer. They follow no national rule.
We publish a tax holiday date only when the state has released its official calendar. The others are marked as unverified.
The reference-price trap
A crossed-out price is not proof of a discount. Federal rules on reference prices require that the “usual” price was actually charged, but enforcement is limited. Always compare with another seller before deciding.
What the calendar tells you before the discounts do
Retail timings follow the same anchors every year, which makes them predictable. Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, so the four-day run from Black Friday to Cyber Monday falls inside the same week each time. Christmas is a fixed date, so the last shipping cut-off before December 25 moves with the weekday rather than with the year.
The clearance cycle is the other predictable part. Seasonal stock is reduced after the holiday it belongs to, not before: winter clothing drops in January, summer stock in August, and holiday decorations in the days after Dec 25, 2026. Buying for the following year just after the holiday is usually cheaper than buying in the same week.
Where these dates meet the rest of the calendar
Shopping dates sit on top of three other calendars. Federal holidays decide which days banks, government offices and the post office close, district school calendars decide when families are travelling, and SAT and ACT sessions fill the Saturdays of the school year. A delivery promised “before the holidays” depends on all three.
Frequently asked questions
When is Black Friday in 2026?
Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving, so its date follows Thanksgiving: November 27, 2026 in 2026. Because Thanksgiving is fixed to the fourth Thursday of November, Black Friday always falls between November 23 and November 29.
When is Cyber Monday in 2026?
The Monday after Thanksgiving weekend: November 30, 2026 in 2026. It is an online event with no official status — retailers created it, and they can move it.
Are stores open on Thanksgiving Day?
It varies by retailer and by state, and opening hours are usually announced in November. Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, so government offices, banks and the post office are closed, but no law requires a shop to close.
Are sales tax holidays national?
No. Sales tax is set by each state, so a tax holiday exists only where the state has voted one. Dates, eligible products and price caps differ from state to state, and some states have none at all.
Is a Black Friday discount always a real discount?
Not necessarily. A crossed-out price only means something if the higher price was actually charged before. Comparison across sellers, and a look at the model number, tells you more than the percentage on the label.
Do the same dates apply in 2027?
The weekday anchor stays the same, so the dates move: Thanksgiving falls on November 25, 2027 in 2027, which pushes Black Friday to November 26 and Cyber Monday to November 29.
