How the 2026–2027 year differs across Georgia

School dates in Georgia are not set at state level. Among the districts we track, DeKalb County goes back first, on August 3, 2026, while Gwinnett County starts on August 5, 2026 — a gap of 2 days.

Spring break is just as uneven: it runs April 5 – 9, 2027 in DeKalb County and April 5 – 9, 2027 in Atlanta. Always check your own district’s calendar rather than a state-wide one before booking travel.

Where Georgia sits among the states we cover

Across the 23 districts we track nationwide, the first day ranges from August 3, 2026 at DeKalb County to September 10, 2026 at New York City. The last day ranges from May 21, 2027 at Fort Worth ISD to June 28, 2027 at New York City.

In Georgia, the earliest first day among the districts we track is August 3, 2026 at DeKalb County, and the latest last day is May 27, 2027 at DeKalb County. A date that is early in one state can be late in another, which is why a national “back to school” date does not exist.

How schools are organised in Georgia

Georgia districts open early, often in the first week of August, and take a short fall break in October on top of Thanksgiving and spring break. DeKalb County School District, one of the largest in metro Atlanta, also publishes inclement-weather days that can be converted into school days.
