Federal holidays 2027: the complete calendar
The eleven federal holidays of 2027, with the observed date when a holiday falls on a weekend — and what that changes for schools and businesses.
The United States has eleven federal holidays. They do not close businesses the way a public holiday might elsewhere: banks and federal agencies shut down, while many private companies observe only part of the list.
The observed-date rule has been the same since 1971: when a holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, it is observed the Monday after. That is why July 4, 2027 is observed on July 5, and Christmas 2027 on December 24.
For families, the two dates that matter most are Thanksgiving and the winter holidays: school districts often close from Wednesday to Friday of Thanksgiving week, and for two weeks around Christmas.
The dates on this page come from the Office of Personnel Management rules. Each row shows the official name and, where relevant, why the date was moved.
A federal holiday does not require a private employer to close. If you are planning a move, a delivery or an administrative appointment, check the state and city calendars too: some add dates that are not on the federal list.
