Tax deadlines 2027: the four dates to remember

Annual return and quarterly estimated payments: four dates structure the US tax year, and they all fall on the 15th.

The US tax year is paid in several instalments. The annual return for the previous year is due on April 15, at the same time as the first estimated payment for the current year.

The other three estimated payments fall on June 15, September 15 and January 15 of the following year. This schedule mainly concerns self-employed workers and income that is not subject to withholding.

If the 15th falls on a weekend or a holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. It is a simple rule, but it explains most of the differences between years.

States add their own deadlines, sometimes a month later. A taxpayer living in a state with an income tax therefore has two calendars to follow, not one.

Frequently asked questions

When is the 2026 tax return due?

On April 15, 2027, the same day as the first estimated payment for 2027. Two obligations therefore share one date.

Who makes quarterly estimated payments?

Taxpayers whose income is not covered by withholding: self-employed workers, freelancers, landlords and investors. Employees with payroll withholding usually do not.

Do the deadlines move when the 15th is a weekend?

Yes, to the next business day. In 2027 all four dates fall on a weekday, so the nominal date and the effective date are the same.
